![]() A movie like Marshal Law is a delightful little action adventure romp with over-the-top 1980s sensibilities (and wardrobe!) and some terrific fight scenes. Some might call them guilty pleasures, ashamed by their own responses. These are flicks I cannot help but enjoy. They might be cheesy as hell, they might not have the best pedigree in terms of dialogue or line delivery, they might ride some familiar genre tropes pretty hard, but they have spirit and heart and creative mayhem to spare. Some movies just bring a goofy smile to my face when I watch them. Director Steve Cohen brought some fun Hong Kong stunt work and martial arts antics to the cop genre while also introducing America to the Hong Kong sensation Cynthia Rothrock in 1990’s Martial Law. The two ass kicking detectives go to town, cleaning up LA of its shady elements. Sean discovers connections to a shady dojo and an arms deal with a right-wing nutcase going down soon. When Michael gets in over his head and ends up the latest victim in a Dim Mak (Death Punch) murder, the whole situation gets personal. When Sean’s lover, vice cop Billie Blake (Cynthia Rothrock) stumbles onto leads that connect to one of Sean’s cases, the two become partners tracking down stolen cars and more illicit activities. In fact, he’s a low-level operative working for gang lord Dalton Rhodes (David Carradine), stealing expensive sports cars for delivery to a Asian crime boss Chang (John Fujioka). When Michael is picked up as a passenger in a hot car, he tries to claim he was just hitchhiking and got picked up by the wrong guy, but this is all smokescreen. His brother Michael (Andy McCutcheon) seems to be falling in with a bad crowd. Synopsis: Sean Thompson (Chad McQueen) is a cop with martial arts skills and the nickname Martial Law.
